Smith Chapel Food and Clothing Mission was started by Danny & Jane Devol in 2001 as a faith-based mission of Smith Chapel United Methodist Church, a small country congregation in Hocking County, Ohio, and evolved into a major supplier of food assistance to residents of the county. SCFCM relies on the support of donors and occasional grants. Contributors have been faithful in giving which has enabled the organization to provide help to those in need in our county. The goal of SCFCM is to be able to purchase groceries so that a box of food can be provided to eligible families once each month on an annual budget of about $110,000, plus operating expenses. On average, about 800 families (2100-2400 individuals) are served each month. November and December typically have the most families requesting assistance.
SCFCM has no paid employees and functions solely on the efforts of very loyal volunteers most of whom devote many hours each week to assuring that this mission is carried out. The organization also operates a Thrift Store where clothing and various donated items are offered to any shoppers for a small donation. Proceeds of the Thrift Store cover most of the operating expenses of SCFCM (utilities, insurance, rent, repairs, etc.).
As more and more families of Hocking County became in need of food assistance, there was an effort to expand the operation to a larger facility. In 2012, the organization was incorporated into a non-profit 5013 organization and renamed - Smith Chapel Food And Clothing Mission. SCFCM continues to rely on donations and grants to sustain its mission.
